1. Red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the DEAD battery.
2. Red clamp on the other end to the positive (+) terminal of the DONOR battery.
3. Black clamp to the negative (-) terminal of the DONOR battery.
4. Black clamp on the other end to a bare, unpainted metal surface on the DEAD vehicle — an engine mounting bolt or a strut tower works. Never to the dead battery's negative post.
The reason for that last step: as current begins to flow, small sparks are inevitable. Grounding away from the battery keeps any spark away from the hydrogen gas venting from the battery cell caps.
Starting the vehicles
Start the donor vehicle first. Let it idle for two to three minutes to begin trickling current into the dead battery. Now try to start the dead vehicle. Crank for no more than 5 seconds. If it does not start, wait 30 seconds and try once more.
Two failed 5-second cranks is your stop signal. Continuing to grind the starter will heat it up, drain the donor battery, and won't fix the underlying problem. At that point the issue is almost certainly deeper than a low battery — a bad starter, corroded ground cable, or a completely dead cell.
Removing the cables the right way
Reverse the connection order exactly. Black off the dead vehicle's chassis first, then black off the donor negative, then red off the donor positive, then red off the dead positive. Keep the clamps from touching anything metal while you work — including each other.
Once the previously dead vehicle is running, don't shut it off immediately. Drive it for at least 20 to 30 minutes on the freeway. A brief idle in the driveway is not enough to meaningfully recharge a deeply discharged battery — the alternator needs sustained RPM under load.
