Flat Tire Repair vs Tire Replacement: How to Choose

Not every flat needs a new tire — but plenty of them do. Here's how San Diego roadside techs decide between a patch and a replacement.

Key takeaways

  • Only punctures in the center tread (roughly the middle 3/4) are safely repairable.
  • Sidewall damage, cuts, or bulges always mean replacement — no exceptions.
  • Run-flat tires are usually not safely repairable after being driven flat.
  • Age matters: tires 6+ years old often warrant replacement rather than repair.

When a flat tire can safely be repaired

A puncture is repairable when it sits inside the center tread area, is 1/4 inch (6 mm) or smaller, has not been driven on while flat, and the tire is otherwise in good condition. Nails and screws in the middle of the tread are the classic repairable case.

A proper repair means a combination plug-patch installed from the inside of the tire after dismounting — not an external string plug. External plugs are a temporary fix at best, and most reputable tire manufacturers explicitly warn against them.

When a tire must be replaced

Replace the tire whenever the damage is on the sidewall or shoulder, if there's a cut longer than 1/4 inch, or if the tire has a bulge, bubble, or exposed cord. These are structural failures — no patch will make the tire safe again.

Also replace if the tire was driven on while flat for more than a very short distance, or if tread depth is already at or below 4/32". At that point the tire is near end-of-life anyway.

Why this matters on San Diego roads

Interstate speeds on the 5, 8, 15, and 805 leave zero margin for a failed repair. A questionable patch on a tire that hits 75 mph in stop-and-go traffic is a blowout waiting to happen — which is why our mobile technicians err toward replacement when the damage is borderline.

Frequently asked questions

Can Go Ape repair a flat tire on the side of the road?

Our mobile service focuses on tire replacement rather than plug repairs. If your tire is safely repairable, we can install your spare or a new tire on-site and recommend a proper interior patch afterward.

How long does a properly patched tire last?

A correctly installed interior combination patch typically lasts the remaining life of the tire, provided the puncture met the repairable criteria above.
